Cyclops is a fictional character, a superhero who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. He often serves as the field leader of the X-Men. A mutant, Cyclops emits a powerful energy beam from his eyes (an "optic blast"). In uniform, he wears a battle visor with a single, ruby-quartz lens running eye-to-eye; the resulting one-eyed appearance is why he is codenamed "Cyclops." Created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-writer Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in The X-Men #1 (September 1963). Originally dubbed Slim Summers, by X-Men #3 his name was changed to Scott—Slim became just a nickname. Scott is the first X-Man recruited by Professor Charles Xavier; Xavier hand-picks Scott to lead his X-Men, and to carry on the legacy of his mutant-human-harmony ideals. Xavier views Scott as one of his most prized pupils; their relationship exhibits father/son qualities. From time to time Scott's extreme loyalty to Xavier has cost him dearly in his relationships with others; but, over the course of the characters' publication history, he eventually emerges from Xavier's shadow as the X-Men's undisputed leader. Cyclops is most often portrayed as the archetypal hero of traditional American popular culture—the opposite of the tough, anti-authority, antiheroes that emerged in American popular culture after the Vietnam War (e.g., Wolverine, his X-Men teammate). Selfless, self-disciplined, and ethical, Cyclops also possesses tremendous leadership abilities, and great tactical and strategic skills. He is the son of Corsair (Major Christopher Summers) of the Starjammers; the oldest brother of both Havok (Alex Summers) and Vulcan (Gabriel Summers); the father of Cable (Nathan Summers); and, the widower of Madelyne Pryor and Jean Grey. He is also a long-time friend of Beast (Hank McCoy). In alternate realities, he has also been the father of Rachel Summers and Ruby Summers, and a biological parent of X-Man and Stryfe.

Avengers vs the X-men[]

When Nova crashed in New York, he warned the Avengers about the Phoenix before fainting by saying "It's Coming". With this, the Avengers discovered that the Phoenix Force was once again on its way to Earth. Meanwhile, on Utopia Cyclops trains Hope, while Emma Frost and Magneto are watching from afar. When she asked why she is trained so hard, Scot refused to give her a straight answer and as a result of this and of the harsh training Hope flared up with the power of the Phoenix, which the Avengers immediately detected. Captain America consulted Wolverine, who told him of Hope Summers and the threat that the Phoenix posed.

Captain America rallied all of his fellow Avengers and traveled to Utopia to give Cyclops an ultimatum. He told Cyclops to hand Hope over to him and the Avengers so that she could be taken off world in order to prevent the Phoenix from coming to Earth. Cyclops refused, knowing that the Phoenix was coming to Earth for a reason and believing that reason was to restore mutantkind. After Captain America refused to leave without Hope, Cyclops blasted him which prompted Captain America to order the Avengers to attack. A grand battle broke out between the Avengers and the X-Men for Utopia. The Avengers gained the upper hand and the X-Men appeared to surrender. This was only a ruse however and Cyclops teleported out of Utopia together with several of his strongest X-Men. During the battle, Hope had escaped Utopia and now both the X-Men and Avengers were pursuing her.

After various skirmishes between the Avengers and the X-Men, the X-Men found out that Hope was heading to the Moon in order to confront the Phoenix. Cyclops took the X-Men present with him; Namor, Emma Frost, Colossus and Magik and hurriedly teleported to the Moon. There they found the Avengers as well and a fight broke out. Their battle was interrupted however by the coming of the Phoenix. The Phoenix attempted to claim Hope as its host but in her fear she rejected it and tried to prevent herself from becoming the host. Iron Man used an experimental weapon with the intention of destroying the Phoenix. The weapon failed however and instead split the Phoenix Force in five portions, one of each inhabited the five X-Men present on the Moon.

The X-Men took Hope and left the Moon, returning to Earth. Here they used their new powers to make the world a better place; eliminating wars, hunger, thirst and the energy crisis in order to create a global Utopia. Hope revealed that the Phoenix still called to her however and when Cyclops asked her if she was ready to accept it now, she eagerly answered yes. Cyclops denied her however, saying that she proved herself unworthy of the Phoenix Force when she rejected it on the Moon. The Avengers still didn't trust the Phoenix or the X-Men however and continued to oppose them. They broke into Utopia in an attempt to kidnap Hope. Cyclops attempted to stop them but was surprised when the Avenger Scarlet Witch was able to use her powers to hurt him. The surprise was enough for the Avengers to reach Hope, who went with them willingly. Cyclops, believing that they were going to use Hope as a weapon against them declared "No more Avengers".

The Avengers continued to fight a guerrilla war against the X-Men but with the Phoenix Five on the X-Men's side, the Avengers were poorly matched and more of them failed with each battle. When the Avengers took the teenaged Transonic as hostage, Namor; one of the hosts of the Phoenix finally lost his patience and invaded the Avengers base in the country of Wakanda. Namor flooded Wakanda and called out the Avengers. Through their combined might, the Avengers were just barely able to defeat Namor and suffered heavy losses like the destruction of Wakanda in the process. Upon being defeated, Namor's portion of the Phoenix left him and joined with the other four Phoenixes, giving them even greater power.

With this increased burden upon them, the Phoenix Four began to show slight signs of losing control, with the exception of Cyclops who remained in complete control of himself. Magik created a hellish prison for the captured Avengers by transporting a piece of the demonic realm of Limbo to Earth. The remaining Avengers staged a raid on the prison to free their compatriots but were confronted by two of the Phoenixes, Colossus and Magik. The Avenger Spider-Man remained behind to fight the both of them, but he stood no chance against them. Colossus easily beat him but refrained from killing him or seriously injuring him, something that enraged Magik who wanted Spider-Man dead. Colossus began to become worried about what Magik was saying, believing that she was losing control of the Phoenix and offered to take her portion. This greatly angered Magik, which Spider-Man exploited; egging them on until the two of them began to fight. The both knocked each other out and lost their portions of the Phoenix, which went to Cyclops and Emma.

With his greatly increased power, Cyclops was able to break the dimensional barriers that separated him from the Avengers new hideout; the magical realm of K'un-L'un. Cyclops made short work of all the Avengers that attempted to stop him, knocking each of them away. The Avengers unleashed Shao-Lao, the dragon that was the source of K'un-L'un's power upon Cyclops. The dragon's flames were able to harm him but it was young and not strong enough to defeat him. As Cyclops bared down on Hope, she absorbed the powers of both the dragon and the Scarlet Witch and with those powers combined was able to banish Cyclops, sending him to the Moon. Cyclops was immobilized there for a while but when he recovered, he angrily realized that he needed more power and headed for Emma. He could not bring himself to attack Emma, however, and they were interrupted by Professor X, who arrived and attempted to shut down their brains. A battle ensued, with the combined might of the Avengers and X-Men uniting to defeat Cyclops and Emma.

The battle was going terrible for the Phoenixes and at the end Scott gave in and took the final piece of the Phoenix from Emma and he the sole host of the Phoenix Force. Xavier attempted to shut him down again but Scott lost his patience and killed him. Hosting the entire Phoenix proved too much for Cyclops and he lost control, becoming Dark Phoenix. After that Dark Phoenix Scott went around the world and started destroying everything that he encountered. The Avengers couldn't stop him for causing too much damage to the planet. After some hours the

Jean Grey is back

Jean helps Cyclops let go of Phoenix

Avengers find again the Phoenix and this time Hope and the Scarlet Witch engage him and he manages to get control for long enough to beg them to kill him. They manage to exorcise the Phoenix Force ,with some help from Jean Grey who appears only to Scott for very brief moments by telling him all of this has to stop and it is time for the Phoenix to go, from him and Hope dissipates it, using it to re-spark mutantkind. Cyclops is brought into custody and Captain America visits him in his cell. Cyclops accepts full responsibility for everything that happened and asks Rogers not to hunt down the X-Men that went missing after their conflict. After Cyclops learns that mutantkind has been reborn he states that while he regrets the destruction he caused and the death of Professor Xavier, he would do it all again to save mutantkind.

Wolverine and the X-men[]

Shortly after the battle for Utopia, Cyclops visited the school and attempted to sway Wolverine to his side in the battle. Wolverine refused him however and Cyclops revealed that convincing Wolverine was not his only purpose in coming here. He called on his fellow X-Men at the school to join him and among others; Iceman, Angel and his daughter Rachel joined his cause.

Phoenix Five vs Mr. Sinister[]

After receiving the Phoenix, Cyclops and his fellow Phoenixes detected Mr. Sinister deep beneath the Earth's surface; Sinister had built a copy of 19th century London underground together with an army of his clones. Cyclops and the other Phoenixes realized that Sinister would be a great threat to their new global Utopia and traveled beneath the Earth in order to destroy him. Sinister was prepared for this however, and had been expecting them. Sinster planned to steal the Phoenix Force from them in order to use it for his own devices. He pitted the Phoenixes against clones of X-Men and X-Men foes alike, such as Gambits, Cyclopses and Sabretooths. He used a device to siphon the Phoenix Force from them into six clones of Jean Grey. Magneto, Psylocke, Danger and Storm pursued the Phoenixes in an attempt to help them, but they were no match for the Phoenix wielding clones. During the battle however, Emma Frost was able to enter the mind of one of the clones in order to communicate with the Phoenix. She reminded the Phoenix that it had come to Earth for a reason and that Sinister would merely keep it trapped under the Earth forever. The Phoenix violently left the clones and returned to the Phoenix Five, who used their great power to incinerate Sinister and destroy his city.

Consequences[]

Cyclops was arrested and placed in a general population prison with a power diminishing uniform. In prison, he befriended a mutantand small-time crook named Jake. Even though Cyclops had decided to stay imprisoned for political reasons, he asked Magneto to break him out after Jake was killed by mutant-haters. Magneto, Danger and Magik destroyed the prison and freed Cyclops, avenging Jake by having Magik send his killers to Limbo and disfigure the warden whose organization wanted to make profit from mutant misery. After Danger declared she would be walking her own path Scott, Magik and Magneto resolved to continue protecting mutants and save the world that hates and fears them.

Marvel Now[]

All New X-men[]

Together with Magneto and Magik, Cyclops went about liberating unjustly imprisoned mutants and offering them help with their powers and a place on his team. Acting on an old idea, he made the former headquarters of Weapon X his team's new home. While attempting to liberate Emma Frost, Cyclops and Magneto both began to lose control of their powers. Emma revealed that she had also been going through this and told them that the Phoenix Force had altered the nature of their powers. Cyclops vowed to find a way to fix Magneto, Emma and himself. While attempting to recruit another young mutant, he was confronted by his younger self accompanied by younger versions of the five original X-Men. He was attacked by the young Jean Grey and his visors fell off. He was teleported back to weapon x facility where he wanted to be alone until Emma Frost came to him and asked if what he saw was real and that beast is doing this to punish him. Later he found Benjamin Deeds and he made a threat to him because he knows who he is.He told him to come with him and he could leave if he wants to.

Mutant Revolution[]

As Cyclops began to rescue more and more mutants, the people on the street began to deem him as a "Revolutionary" holding signs and t-shirts stating "Cyclops was right".

However, according to Magneto, the people didn't know the "real" Cyclops as an arrogant murdering monster who should be in jail and that it would not take much for S. H. I. E. L. D. to break him and discredit him. He also began to sport a new costume with a giant X emblazoned proudly on his head, indicative of both his mentor and his Mutant Revolution.

Battle Of the Atom[]

Part 1[]

During a battle with a newly discovered mutant, Kitty Pryde and her team original All New X-Men, are encountered by a band of Sentinels. After the quick rescue, the two X-Men teams join forces and defeat the remaining Sentinels. One of the Sentinel heads remains active and points Jean but young Cyclops stands and protects her and it kills the younger Cyclops, and because of this, the older Cyclops ceases to exist. But thanks to Triage, the revival of the younger Scott Summers also returns the main one back to reality. After the battle, the groups part ways, and back at the Uncanny X-Men's base, the team is reviewing the footage of what happened, but Christopher runs off due to the traumatic experience that happened, and Scott goes to calm him down and to thank for saving him.

Phoenix Five Cyclops

  • Interstellar Travel: A Phoenix Force avatar can fly unaided through the vacuum of space, and can travel interstellar distances faster than the speed of light.
  • Cosmic Pyrokinesis: An Avatar of the Phoenix can create 'cosmic' flames under any conditions even the impossible ones such as vacuum space or underwater. These flames do not require oxygen to burn, and burn so intensely that matter is consumed without by-products such as ash. It has perfect control over these flames, and they only consume what it wills. Typically they manifest as a raptor or part of a raptor such as a claw or wings, in the case of an avatar.
  • Resurrection: As the embodiment of life and death itself, the Phoenix Force can resurrect whomever it wills.
  • Immortality: The Avatar of the Phoenix does not age and can be resurrected by the Phoenix Force.
  • Temporal Manipulation: An Avatar acting as the Phoenix Force n can manipulate the past across large temporal distances and with a profound knowledge of the causal effect his or her actions will have.
  • Telepathy: A Phoenix Force Avatar can project their thoughts into the minds of others and read other peoples thoughts at a near boundless level.
  • Telekinesis: An Avatar of the Phoenix can manipulate matter at a molecular scale.

Abilities[]

Telepathic Resistance: Years of being in intimate situations with telepaths have allowed Cyclops to hone his mind to the point where he can resist telepathic intrusion and withhold certain information from high level telepaths.

Expert Pilot: Cyclops is an expert pilot of fixed-wing aircraft, a skill he appears to have inherited from his father. It has also been implied that his trigonometric sense improves his abilities in the air.

Master Strategist and Tactician: Cyclops has spent most of his superhero career as the leader of either the X-men or X-Factor and has developed exceptional leadership skills. It is notable that regardless of their general attitude towards him, all of the X-Men tend to obey his orders in battle - because they know that he is usually right.

Master Strategist

Expert Martial Artist: Cyclops also has extensive training in martial arts and unarmed combat, holding black belts in judo and aikido. His level of skill is sufficient to defeat six normal men with his eyes closed, and he has in the past held his own against such dangerous enemies as Wolverine and Ghost Rider.

Strength[]

Cyclops possesses the strength of a normal human male who engages in intensive regular exercise and hence is able to press lift at least his own body-weight.

Weaknesses[]

Genetic Flaw: Cyclops is not immune to Vulcan's powers like he is to Havok's.
