Kept in stasis by the Evolutionary for decades, the two infants (Quicksilver and Wanda) were later placed in the custody of a Gypsy couple named Django and Marya Maximoff. When Wanda and Pietro were teenagers, and had already manifested their mutant powers, their family's encampment was attacked, leaving Marya dead; Django survived, but was separated from his children, while the traumatized Wanda and Pietro also fled, believing their foster father to have died. After several months of surviving on their own in the woods, the siblings ventured into a nearby town, where Wanda's powers inadvertently set fire to a house. Set upon by villagers who believed the pair to be "in league with the Devil", they were rescued by the timely arrival of Magneto, the mutant master of magnetism. Magneto was in fact their father, but neither he nor the siblings were aware of this at the time. Exploiting the pair's gratitude, Magneto pressed them into service as part of his anti-human terrorist unit, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Now known as the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, Wanda and Pietro accompanied Magneto and his fellow mutants in their power-seeking efforts, clashing with the heroic X-Men. After a time, the siblings, disillusioned with Magneto and feeling that their debt to him had been paid, decided to abandon their terrorist activities; alongside the archer and ex-criminal Hawkeye, they joined the Avengers under the leadership of Captain America. As a member of this foursome, the first major reorganization of the still young super-team, the Scarlet Witch served with distinction against such foes as Dr Doom, the Mole Man, Kang, and others. As the team expanded, the Scarlet Witch, despite her brother's disapproval, became romantically drawn to one of her fellow Avengers, the android known as the Vision.

Avengers vs X-men[]

In #0 of Avengers vs Xmen, she was in a battle with M.O.D.O.K , trying to be a hero again. During the fight, Ms Marvel and Spider-woman appear and help Wanda. Once the battle clears, Ms Marvel confronts her old friend and asks her to come back to the Avengers Mansion. But once they get there the Vision, Wolverine, Beast, and Iron-man tell her to leave, not forgiving her for what she had done. With Wanda crying, Ms Marvel takes her home. And when no one is looking, the Vision cries too.

In #2, she is sharing an apartment with her brother Quicksilver, watching the battle of Utopia on TV. Pedro asks her if she would come and help him fight the X-men, but she does not answer. Once Quicksilver leaves, she picks up her Diary, showing a page which says "This is how the world ends!" Showing a picture of the Phoenix Force underneath. She is one of the people on earth to sense the force presence and see that it would kill the original Avengers. When the Avengers go to extract Hope Summers from Utopia and are nearly defeated by a Phoenix Force-powered Cyclops, Scarlet Witch arrives and saves them. Hope agrees to go with the Scarlet Witch, and Wanda causes physical harm to Cyclops when he touches Wanda's arm when he tries to stop her from taking Hope. Though hunted by the Phoenix-powered X-Men, Wanda's return to the team provides the Avengers a much needed boost as many teammates are captured by the X-Men. Hawkeye ultimately is severely injured rescuing Wanda from being teleported away by Magik and White Queen, the former of which sees Wanda as a monster for depowering mutantkind. However, Wanda's power provides the X-Men with a threat that not even the Phoenix can face down as the Avengers employ magical illusions to trick the X-Men into thinking Wanda is with the various Avengers groups. Further investigation meanwhile links Wanda's powers to the Phoenix Force. When Cyclops goes Dark Phoenix, Wanda and Hope Summers, who is mimicking Wanda's powers, defeat him and cause the Phoenix force to leave him. After Hope inherits the Phoenix force, she and Wanda combine their powers to apparently destroy the Phoenix by saying "No more phoenix". This results in the repowering of mutants, undoing Wanda's actions on M-Day.

Uncanny Avengers[]

While visiting Charles Xavier's grave, Wanda was approached by Rogue who tried to make her leave. The two wound up fighting, when they were captured by the Red Skull. The Red Skull also took Xavier's corpse and cut out his brain, claiming his vast telepathic powers for himself. The Red Skull then used his powers to brainwash Wanda into helping him de-power mutantkind once again. While tracking down Rogue who had escaped his custody, Wanda encountered Xavier's corpse which snapped her out of the Skull's control.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Chaos Magic Reality Warping: Wanda's main power is the superhuman ability to manipulate and warp reality at will, granted to her by the High Evolutionary's experimentations and further amplified by the demon (imprisoned within ) when she was born. She accomplishes this by manipulating a force known as . Her "hexes" were, by extension, simple, indirect manifestations of this magic, destabilizing probabilities by affecting energy fields and matter, ultimately inducing chaos. While acting as a conduit for the planet's Life Force, Wanda's powers are further amplified and not always under her conscious control; their effects persisted even after Dr. Strange's shut down her mind. Even the combined efforts of the Sorceror Supreme and Earth's most formidable psychic were unable to fully inhibit such effects for long.
    • Hex Bolts: Initially, Wanda had the ability to manipulate probability via her "hexes" (often manifesting physically as "hex spheres" or "hex bolts") which manipulated energy fields and matter to varying degrees. These hexes were initially short range, and are limited to her line of sight. Casting a hex would initially require a gesture and concentration on her part, though the gestures are largely a focus for the concentration. Early in her career, her hexes were unconscious, and would be automatically triggered whenever she made a particular gesture, regardless of her intent. These hexes would only manifest as "bad luck", triggering negative effects. She later gained enough control over her powers that they only work when she wants them to, and they are not limited to negative effects. Wanda can use her hexes to cause a wide variety of phenomena, including but not limited to:
      • Spontaneous combustion or melting.
      • Rapid or spontaneous decaying, breaking, healing, or fixing.
      • Molecular destabilization.
      • Energy control, transference, disruption, amplification, and transmutation.
      • Inertia redirection, amplification, disruption, and transference.
      • Lighting flammable objects.
      • Containing or removing air from a particular volume.
      • Canceling other's powers and abilities.
      • Stopping the momentum of projectiles.
      • Blocking, unlocking, closing and opening doors, objects and technological devices.
      • Exploding objects.
      • Creating force fields.
      • Deflecting normal and magical attacks.
      • Negating or distorting physical laws and manipulating physical forces.
      • Altering, affecting, and controlling matter, the molecular composition and physical state/form of physical objects.
      • Causing various forms of energy to spontaneously appear or disappear.
